The Chicken Coop Project was formed in summer of 2015 to help nourish the children in the feeding program who are lacking protein in their diet. The Haitian diet consists of primarily rice and beans which is not a substantial amount of protein give the children may only eat one or two meals a week. Hopestart was able to use part of your giving to purchase 600 baby chicks and mature them to table ready chickens in 6 weeks. As you can see the time for the chicks to grow does not take long and with the generosity of your donations we were able to purchase a freezer to store the chickens until they are eaten. Each fryer chicken cost approximately $1 USD. Your donations towards the chicken project will help purchase more baby chicks in order to continue providing protein rich meals to our children in the orphanage and the feeding program.
We have just constructed our second chicken coop to raise another kind of chicken. Our desire is to purchase 200 Layers, these are chickens that lay eggs, to supplement the meals and give the children additional opportunities for protein in their diet. The cost of a Layer is $10 USD. Your contribution to the Chicken Coop Project will purchase chickens and the feed they consume.
